Shad or elf

(Pomatomous saltatrix)

What an apt scientific name for this specie. Those of you who have been fortunate enough to hook into a decent size elf on an artificial lure will know exactly what I mean; “saltatrix”. They jump, twist and shake their head, trying to throw the lure, performing all sorts of aerial “tricks”

Kob or kabeljou

(Dusky – Argyrosomus japonicus)

Kob are one of my favourite species of fish to target. As we predominantly fish in the Eastern and Western Cape it is in fact the dusky kob that lends itself to the hours of enjoyment spent in search of this ambush hunter.

Dusky kob numbers are extremely low and without our help will soon be threatened. Let’s work together and save a specie by handling our catch with care and releasing it, let’s make a difference.

Namibia calling

and we answer

The inner-caveman starts to claw at the surface. You picture catching the salmon on your sushi plate; you order beer instead of your usual vino to accompany a dish; dirt, early mornings and late nights, burps and farts, braaivleis and vuilgrappe; pluk vir jou n wandelstaf (visstok) want hierdie lyf wil see toe.

Basiese kunsaas hengel

A bit of lure fishing in the Klein Brak River

Some light tackle fishing in the Southern Cape area (Klein Brak River).

This past weekend we had the wonderful privilege of heading down to the Southern Cape Coast for some light tackle dropshot, popping and scratching.

Our lure angling tackle

The tackle we use for our artificial lure angling in the estuaries and rock and surf spinning.

So we got stuck into this whole artificial lure angling thing quite a while ago. I was glued to the TV each time the ESA team had a “dropshot” fishing session. I loved the idea of the challenge, outsmarting a fish to have a go at your lure; and of course, the ESA guys were catching loads of kingies and wave-garrick in KZN, seemed so easy, but little did we know that it is a bit more difficult the further South you went. Regardless, I was convinced that we were going to catch dozens of fish down in the Eastern and Southern Cape…

The Bounce Retrieve

Twitch, bounce, twitch, bounce, twitch, ON!!!

We have found that for targeting kob, this is the most effective retrieve to use. Make no mistake, we have hooked kob on flat-out retrieves whilst specifically targeting leeries, but nothing comes close to the turnover ratio of the “The Bounce Retrieve”.
