when the going gets tough

Stepping onto a beach you know like the back of your hand is similar to cracking a beer when lighting a braai fire, it just feels right.

It was low tide and the best time for the reconnaissance mission. We walked the beach we intend to fish, trying to identify any new formations. Around the first bend it was evident that a lot of sand had washed into the beach. Changing structures and human interference, even hundreds of kilometers away can have a significant impact on the currents and how the water naturally flows. I am sure the developments towards the PE side had caused the beach layout to change a bit over the past years.

perseverance or madness

Fear, adrenaline, uncertainty, excitement, hope, joy… you pick the emotion and I will tell you why.

I have often told the stories of catching large Garrick on chisel nose poppers in the Breede River or double-digit Kob on bucktail in the surf in the Eastern Cape. Truth be told, none measure up to that one late afternoon from the launch pad in the Kariega River.

Ending off 2013 at Cannon Rocks and Boknes

The Christmas / New Year’s holiday was upon us. Although only a short, one week break, it was dearly needed. The idea of heading down to the Eastern Cape for a few days had me excited for weeks in advance. Cannon Rocks was calling and at 11.30am we hit the road from Somerset West.

Boknes – A hidden paradise (part 2)

As mentioned in our first post about Boknes (destinations uncovered) this small coastal town of Boknes lies “nestled” away between Boesmans River / Kenton on Sea in the East and Cannon Rocks in the West. A sleepy little place out of holiday season, you are pretty much guaranteed to have the best fishing spots all to yourself for most of the year. Endless golden sandy beaches and rugged reefs are all found on this coastline and the opportunities for fishing here are endless.

Cannon Rocks – A quick visit to the hallowed grounds

Cannon Rocks fishing trip! The early winter season jitters had firmly taken hold of me. This is a feeling I have grown accustomed to while living down in the Western Cape. Here winter spells bad news for artificial-lure angling and a road-trip down to the Eastern Cape was required to suppress the looming feelings of insanity.
