Boknes – A hidden paradise (part 2)

As mentioned in our first post about Boknes (destinations uncovered) this small coastal town of Boknes lies “nestled” away between Boesmans River / Kenton on Sea in the East and Cannon Rocks in the West. A sleepy little place out of holiday season, you are pretty much guaranteed to have the best fishing spots all to yourself for most of the year. Endless golden sandy beaches and rugged reefs are all found on this coastline and the opportunities for fishing here are endless.

The majority of the houses are holiday homes and provide ample renting opportunities for the holiday maker to choose from. Whether you prefer to stay right on the beach or a few streets back, you will be catered for.

Boknes has two shops that stock bait. You are pretty much limited to the basics, that being sardine and chokka. If you are lucky you will get a fresh batch, but more often than not you will have to make due with a pinkish chokka and old sardines. We normally don’t take along our own bait and prefer to support the local businesses. Unfortunately, if you want to be sure to have the best and freshest bait, take it along on your visit.

We source fresh bait from the area such as sand prawn or cracker shrimp from the lagoon at Boknes, or the odd saddleback from the rocks. Red bait is also readily available on the beaches at the rocky areas; you can pick up some as you walk to your fishing spot. Red bait is hard to find on the exposed rocks, unless your visit coincides with a spring tide. A spring low offers a considerable amount of bait to be sourced. Please keep within the legal limits to ensure that your fellow fisherman and future generations can also share in this awesome pastime.

If you are sourcing any bait from the rocks please ensure to do as little damage to the individual eco-systems as possible. Too often we have seen people turn over huge stones and leave them with all the little creatures left to dry in the sunlight. If you are going to lift up a rock, please ensure to return it to its original position.

A fishing license can be bought from the shop on the lagoon side of the town or from the shop in Cannon Rocks. It is worth noting the trading hours of these shops as they are seldom open on weekends during low-season times. We have often found ourselves staring through a locked door at 4 pm on a weekday afternoon in search of sardines for an elf fishing session.

Parking is available at regular intervals along the beachfront and most fishing spots are very easily accessible. This makes the area perfect for family outings. The parking areas also offer great vantage points from where you can determine if a spot is worth trying.

The area is relatively safe and thankfully we have never had any problems. We regularly fish through the night without ever feeling uneasy. Unfortunately we have to be realistic in regards to crime in our country, so never be naive but always remain aware.
